Thomas Memorial Library to host shelter drive, stage dog wedding

Thomas Memorial Library will celebrate its popular Read to a Dog program, while at the same time supporting the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland in a special event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 20.

One of the dogs’ regular readers, 10-yearold Andy Brooking, has planned an imaginary wedding for the library’s two therapy dogs, Winston and Maddie, for over a year. The library decided to bring his fantasy to life, and are asking the community to bring items from Animal Refuge League’s wish list to donate to the shelter in lieu of wedding gifts. The event will include face painting, a dog cupcake decorating station and dog and cat toy making stations. There also will be information from about animal adoption and volunteer opportunities. If the weather is nice, the event will take place on the library’s front lawn. No registration is necessary. For complete details, as well the refuge league’s wish list, visit the library’s website.
