(Courtesy photo) At the South Portland Historical Society, one of the things we love is when we come across an absolutely wonderful photo like you see here. I just love the clarity of this image that shows the clothing, shoes, mustaches and faces of these mailmen. When this came in, it was identified only as “a group of South Portland letter carriers.” It just makes me want to learn more about the history of mail delivery in South Portland. Of course, then the frustration sets in as we know so little else about it. I thought we’d run the photo in the Sentry this week to see if anyone out there recognizes anyone in the photo or can share any additional information with us.

The buildings in the background lead me to think that these men were posing somewhere in Portland. The mailman who is fourth in from the left actually looks like a mailman that I know, making me wonder if it could be his father or grandfather.

If you have any information to share, please contact us at the museum at 55 Bug Light Park, by phone at 767- 7299, by email at sphistory04106@gmail.com or message us on Facebook at South Portland Historical Society.
