“A Child’s Christmas in Wales” is a much loved almost lyrical tale of childhood Christmas memories. Full of beauty, wonder and nostalgia, this prose-poem harkens back to a simpler time. The 25-minute star of Thomas’ work is best heard aloud for the “music” in the words, and there are few who can bring this story to life the way that Jack can. He has offered this program for several years now and it is always a much-anticipated event. Jack recites this story completely from memory. The way he brings the voices of the characters out is always a delight and makes for a very enjoyable holiday program.

There is no charge for admission, although donations are most welcome. Feel free to come early or stay late and enjoy the museum exhibits, as well. There are only two weekends left to see the Ferry Village exhibit before the museum closes for the season on Dec. 18. The Ferry Village exhibit will be removed to make room for a new exhibit for the 2017 season.

To reach the museum, take Broadway east to the ocean, turn left onto Breakwater Drive, then right on Madison Street that leads right into the park. For GPS users, enter 1 Madison St. to obtain nearest directions. For more information, call 767-7299 or visit us on Facebook at South Portland Historical Society.

In other news, Please don’t forget the South Portland Historical Society’s fundraiser ornament as a great gift idea. This year’s edition covers the World War II Liberty shipyards in South Portland and features a Liberty ship. They can be purchased at the society’s museum (open Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), by phone at 767-7299 (there is an additional $5 charge for shipping), or at one of three off-site locations: Drillen Hardware, Broadway Variety, and Embers Stove Shop. A supply of the prior years’ ornaments (Bug Light and the fishing shacks at Fishermen’s Point/Willard Beach) are also available at the historical society’s museum gift shop at Bug Light Park. A gift card accompanies each ornament, letting a gift recipient know that proceeds support the South Portland Historical Society and its museum.
