Hometown heroes



With school dances curtailed at South Portland High School, the class of 2019 has been forced to turn from peers to the public for fundraising. To help support its activities, the class is sponsoring at celebrity smack-down basketball extravaganza pitting the newly formed South Portland All-Stars against comedy basketball team, the Harlem Superstars. Playing for the home team will be, front row, from left, South Portland Community Center Youth Recreation Coordinator Esther Palmieri, Dyer Elementary kindergarten teacher Emily Lewis, Dyer grade give teacher Samantha Koetisier; and, back row, from left, BuyLocal President April Cohen, of the Maine Real Estate Network, Small Elementary grade one teacher Breanna Sanborn, Chicago Dogs restaurant owner Joe Palmieri, Snap Fitness owner Mark Jellison, Mahoney Middle School Assistant Principal Mitch Ouellet, class of 2019 advisor Resty Sapuan, and South Portland High School Athletic Director Todd Livingston. Also scheduled to suit up for the All-Stars are WSCH sportscaster Lee Goldberg, WCSH head cameraman Steven Sherburne, Mahoney grade eight teacher and middle school coach Mike Nee, and South Portland High School English teacher Bryan Hoy. Tickets for the game, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, are $8 in advance and $10 at the door of Beal Gymnasium.
