Members of the Mahoney Middle School Performance Jazz Band celebrate with Band Director Sandy Barry, center, after wining a Gold Award at the 2017 Maine State Middle School Instrumental Jazz Festival, Saturday, March 25, at Stearns Junior/Senior High School in Millinocket, where they scored 96 out of 100 possible points, making them one of only two bands in Division II to earn the Gold Award. Grade 8 Alto Saxophonist Rosie Saffer-Meng won an "Outstanding Musicianship" award, presented to the top five performers in Division II. Others winning citations for excellent improvisation or solo work included Digby Roberts, Marina Brandao, Jada Briley, Wylie Roberts, Ellie Lomangino, Hailey Greene, Truly Chillemi, Ruby Lynch, and Lucy Hartley. Rounding out the roster that made the Gold Award distinction possible were Cullen Adams, Alice Cardale, Meghan Perry, Olivia Petersen, Alice Bonnevie- Rothrock, Aidan Gorneau, Theo LeBlanc, Sky Jordan, Jane Bonnevie-Rothrock, Blake Kierstead, Ahliysen Kearns, Marcella Hesser, Jonah Diaz, and Jacob Costin.
