In addition to this year’s exhibit, “Our People: At Work and Play,” we also have an updated exhibit related to South Portland schools.

One of the historical society’s longtime volunteers, Kevin Conroy, researched and started this exhibit last year. Kevin also happens to be a retired teacher, having spent his career teaching students at one of our elementary schools that is still open, Skillin School. Initially, he researched all of South Portland’s public elementary schools, and continued his research through this past winter, adding Holy Cross School to the grouping of elementary schools. We devoted new wall space this year so he could also include South Portland’s junior high schools and a history of South Portland High School.

The exhibit includes some great photographs of schools that have come and gone, and some interesting facts about each one. This is a must-see exhibit for anyone who is a current or former South Portland resident.

The museum at Bug Light Park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission. Free museum admission is one of the many benefits made possible by the support of businesses and individuals in the South Portland community who appreciate history and the need to preserve it. If you would like to help, please stop by the museum to pick up a membership brochure, visit us at www.sphistory.org where membership information is available, or give us a call at 767-7299 to become a member with a credit card. We need your support. Thank you and we hope to see you at the museum this year.

Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo is executive director of South Portland Historical Society.
