Hobbs apprentice passes exams

Rachael Powers, a full-time apprentice at Hobbs Funeral Homes, passed her federal National Board Exams. The exams focus on such subjects as science, art and legalities.

The next step for Powers will be the Maine state exams, consisting of a written part and practicum. After passing these, she will become a licensed funeral director.

Powers has an associate degree in funeral services from Mount Ida College in Massachusetts, graduating in December 2015. She completed high school in Lowell, Massachusetts, and was employed in several capacities following college. She makes her home in South Portland.

Her duties include administrative and maintenance functions, attending services and visiting hours, being on call, telephone duties and learning the technical components of funeral service from the Hobbs family and staff.
