Dyer Elementary School

Elizabeth Fowler, Principal

During the 2016-2017 school year, we continue to make learning goals transparent by using “I can” student-friendly language across settings. From the classroom to the cafeteria, students reflect on their progress towards meeting proficiency expectations. A “stars and stairs” model allows us to identify what we are doing well and next steps for learning. We promote growth mindset, embracing the word “yet” and the concept of “failing forward.” Dyer Dragons understand that our mind is a muscle that must be exercised and that mistakes are opportunities for learning. In our library makerspace--the “fab lab”--students engage in challenges such as creating self-watering planters for seedlings, taking apart a flashlight to figure out how it works, sewing gift bags, and designing our own fidget spinners. Students are developing coding skills, self-selecting research topics, and advocating for improvements in wifi access. Community members present their knowledge and skills as “visiting makers” who help students to see the applicability of learning at school to work in the world. We seek to solve problems locally and globally. Positive relationships are at the foundation of the learning going at Dyer. Weekly common planning times provide teachers with time to collaborate on curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. Younger and older students work together weekly in “STEAM buddy”

partnerships to explore science, technology, engineering, arts and math concepts. Weekly guidance lessons and daily “lunch bunches” support students in developing self-awareness, collaboration and conflict resolution skills. Open houses, parent forums, conferences, progress reports, teacher websites, social media posts and weekly updates provide for ongoing communication with families about activities, successes and needs. Our active PTA promotes enrichment and social events to bring school community members together for learning and fun. Frequent celebrations of teaching and learning allow us to appreciate our diverse accomplishments. @DyerDragons #HomeofFierceLearning
