Facilities Maintenance – Protecting the Community’s Investment in Its Schools

Russ Brigham –

Director of Buildings and Grounds

The Facilities department is made up of 42 people, including 36 custodians, 5 maintenance staff, an office manager and Department Director. Through the efforts of these people and a variety of contractors we maintain the schools, grounds and all of the assets within. There are 9 buildings in the district with about 750,000 interior square feet to maintain with similar amount of parking lots, drives and sidewalks outside. It is a continuous process to operate and maintain the district’s buildings. We have people starting at 4:30 a.m. and others staying as late as 1:00 a.m. to cover school-related events or simply be able to clean the buildings as portions become unoccupied. Our buildings range in age back to the early 1900’s

(Mahoney Middle School). The high school renovations were completed two years ago, Skillin underwent renovations in 1993, and the remaining four elementary schools were renovated between in 2003 and 2005. Both middle schools are in dire need of renovation, an issue which is currently being examined by the Middle School Facilities Committee. The Facilities Department is also responsible for the security and safety of our students and staff. The security system helps keep the buildings safe both while children are in school and when they are unoccupied. The buildings are cleaned and sanitized daily to be ready every day for our students. We use a preventative maintenance program to help ensure our equipment is working correctly. Our goal is to provide an environment that is healthy, safe, and comfortable for all occupants.
