School Nutrition Program

Martha Spencer, Director

The South Portland School Nutrition Program continues to place emphasis on healthy eating for all South Portland students. We serve a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. All of our grains are whole grain. We offer only skim or 1% milk. This past fall South Portland High School was fortunate to receive a grant to purchase a breakfast cart so that now we can take breakfast to the SPHS students. Every morning from 7:00 to 7:45 am, the cart is located in the main lobby of the high school so students may purchase breakfast items on their way to class. The breakfast cart returns to the lobby again just before 9 am, between the first and second blocks of the day, so that we may reach the students who have late arrival or just weren’t hungry earlier in the day. We have increased the number of students who eat breakfast as well as serving those who are just looking for a healthy snack. In November we updated our lunch system. Students in middle and high school now have a pin number which they enter into a pin pad and their account comes up on the computer screen much faster. The wait time in lines has been drastically reduced. Parents may still pay for school meals on line at myschoolbucks.com with a Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card. The South Portland School Nutrition Program is more than just a lunch program. We serve breakfast and lunch in every school in South Portland. Kaler and Skillin School have been fortunate to receive a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant so that we may provide each student in these schools a snack of a fresh fruit or vegetable every day. We also provide healthy snacks to the Twenty-One Club After School Learning programs, which are run at Kaler and Skillin. Also, this summer we will be providing breakfast and lunches free of charge to anyone under the age of 18. Breakfast will be provided at the Brick hill Community Room from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and at Kaler Elementary School from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Lunch will be provided at Kaler Elementary School from 11:30 a.m. to noon every day as well. Dinner will be available at The Teen Center at Redbank Community Center from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. These programs will start June 26 and run for most of the summer. The Kaler program will end August 11, The Teen Center August 18 and the Brick hill breakfast will run until August 25.
