Economic development talk open to public

To the editor:

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, South Portland Economic Development Committee (EDC) is sponsoring a talk by Michael Dubyak, ex CEO of WEX and current co-chair of Focus Maine at the South Portland Community Centre.

Dubyak will address economic development in our community and state, the work of Focus Maine which recently unveiled a $4.9 million dollar grant initiative to build systems to retain and attract knowledge workers for Maine businesses. Focus Maine was founded in 2014 with the specific goal of strengthening and revitalizing opportunity in Maine by accelerating the growth of jobs in industries that have a high potential to create jobs here on a sustainable basis.

Afterwards, Dubyak will take questions.

The public is invited to this event.

The sponsorship of it is one of a series of initiatives by the South Portland Economic Development Committee coming out of their report dated January 2016 that was subsequently adopted by city council.

That report, the first in 23 years in South Portland, strongly recommended the creation by the city of a professional full time economic development entity to promote the city as a place to do business. As we go towards this important goal, discussions like the one that Dubyak’s talk will engender are vital.

Economic development, full participation by our city in the region’s efforts is the means by which we’ll maintain our school system, preserve social services, and preserve the diversity in our community that makes South Portland such a special and unique place to live.

I hope you will consider coming out.

The talk is at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Ross Little Chair, South Portland Economic Development Committee
