CAPE ELIZABETH – Fiscal year 2019 budget deliberations won’t begin in earnest until early next year, but the town council this week released the schedule for how the process could play out.

Draft municipal budgets will be due to Town Manager Matthew Sturgis by Monday, Feb. 16. Sturgis will then have close to a month to refine the proposals before delivering his recommended municipal budget to town councilors on Friday, March 9.

The finance committee will begin reviewing it March 20 and March 21.

After a budget workshop Feb. 27 and a public question and answer session March 20 and March 27, all in the high school learning commons, the school board’s finance committee will present its budget to the council Tuesday, April 24. A week later, on Monday, May 7, the municipal and school budgets will be the subject of a public hearing. Town councilors are set to adopt the municipal budget and school budget – which is set to be finalized by the school board April 9 – at their Monday, May 14 meeting.

The school validation vote, in which voters will approve or reject the school budget, is set for Tuesday, June 12.
