They say no two snowflakes are alike. It's also true that no other school body is quite like South Portland's Skillin Elementary, there 430 students joined on Dec. 15 to form this giant, human snowflake. The event celebrated Skillin, one of Maine’s largest and most diverse K-5 populations featuring students from 29 nations, being selected to represent Cumberland County in the annual Winter Games competition created by the nonprofit organization WinterKids. Skillin with host the kickoff for the 16-school event at 2 p.m. Jan. 2, with nearly $5,000 in cash prizes on the line for the Gold Medal winner. With 60 percent of Skillin students living in economically disadvantaged homes, school officials are seeking public help to fund field trips.
