Library to host ‘Rise of Addictive Technology’

South Portland Public Library will host a discussion of the book, “Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked” by Adam Atler at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24. Whether or not you have an opportunity to read the book, all are encouraged to attend.

In this revolutionary book, Atler, a professor of psychology and marketing at New York University, tracks the rise of behavioral addiction and explains why so many of today’s products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that separate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident. The companies that design these products tweak them over time until they become almost impossible to resist.

The discussion will be moderated by Jonathan Werner, a library and instructional technology specialist at Cape Elizabeth Middle School. He is immediate past president of the International Society for Technology in Education’s Librarians Network and serves as an advisor to the Maine Department of Education’s Future Ready Librarians campaign.

The program is sponsored by Friends of the South Portland Public Library. For more information, call 767-7660, ext. 2.
