Fighting for air

Waiting to take their turn at climbing 82 flights of stairs at the 1 Boston Place high-rise during the annual Fight for Air Climb, held Saturday, Feb. 3 in Boston, are South Portland firefighter/paramedics, from left, Ben Guild, Steve Simonson, Zack Tooker, Josh Logan and Skyler Horrigan. Not pictured but also participating was Deputy Chief Philip Selberg. The South Portland team placed third of 32 fire departments from across New England, with Tooker, 26, coming in third overall among the 440 participants, as he raced up 41 stories in 7 minutes, 52 seconds. All of the South Portland team did well, placing no worse that 85th, doing the climb in 11:11. More importantly the team raised $3,000 for lung cancer awareness and event sponsor, the American Lung Association. The only bit of bad news is that the South Portland team was bested by their cross-river rivals, as the Portland Fire Department finished first in the event. The Brockton (Mass.) Fire Department came in second.
