(Courtesy photo) Chief Edward Googins announced that Officer Alfred Giusto has been named the South Portland Police Department’s 2017 Officer of the Year.

Giusto joined the department in July 2012 and is assigned as the school resource officer at South Portland High School. He was selected by the department’s lieutenants and sergeants, along with two representatives from the South Portland Police Patrol Association, from the list of officers who were chosen as Officer of the Month during 2017. Giusto was nominated in February and November 2017 and was selected as Officer of the Month both times.

Giusto has thrived in his assignment as school resource officer and works closely with staff from both the police department and the school department. He is a role model and is able to maintain a rapport with students while also addressing issues, taking reports, investigating complaints and disseminating juvenile and officer safety information. He has an understanding of the unique issues, processes and options involved in the juvenile justice system and uses discretion in a manner that ensures fairness. Additionally, Giusto is a defensive tactics instructor and an active member of the SoPoUnite coalition, formed to combat juvenile substance use in the community.

Giusto will receive two days off with pay, a personalized plaque and an award pin. He was recognized by the South Portland City Council at its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 20 meeting.
