Do better, stop idling

To the editor:

I was happy to read in the March 30 issue that South Portland is working on a climate action plan. Climate change is an important topic on which the city needs to be a leader.

As we all learned in school, one of the best ways to be a leader is to lead by example. Unfortunately, I regularly see city vehicles idling what seems unnecessarily, such as when emptying public trash bins or when inactive during road and similar work. I’ve written to South Portland’s sustainability coordinator and head of public works about this practice more than once. I’ve received quick, polite responses that city workers will be reminded not to idle unnecessarily. But the practice continues.

An easy way to meet the stated goal of independence from fossil fuels is to not nonchalantly burn them in the first place.
