Guest artist to visit library

Illustrator Jamie Hogan will visit South Portland Public Library’s main location at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28. Hogan’s latest picture book, “Ana and the Sea Star,” gently shows children how to be both dreamers and stewards of Maine beaches. Hogan will lead attendees in a search for sea stars washed onto the shores of the library, return them to the surf with a locomotion game, and draw them deep into the blue sea.

In “Ana and the Sea Star,” a young girl finds a starfish on the beach and wants to show it to her mother at home, but doesn’t want to take it from its home. With encouragement from her dad and a little imagination, Ana is able to let the sea star go and yet keep it with her at the same time. The picture book celebrates the power of imagination and an appreciation of the natural world.

Copies of “Ana and the Sea Star” will be available to purchase at the event, and Hogan will sign books after the reading. The book can be checked out from either library location.
