Start off spring with style at the next After Hours concert with The Maine Marimba Ensemble, a Zimbabwean-style marimba band, which will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14 at South Portland Public Library’s main location.

Maine Marimba Ensemble is a percussion band based in Portland. Members not only play marimbas, they also make them. Marimbas are large wooden xylophone-like instruments, and the ones the band plays are handmade by band member Jacob Wolff. The ensemble incorporates rhythms that inspire foot-tapping, hip-swaying and energetic dancing.

The Maine Marimba Ensemble is comprised of members Tchukki Andersen, Kevin Caron, Rob Cimitile, Elliot Heeschen, Pete Himmer, Zebulon Kelley, Chris Fletcher, Matt Wasowski and Wolff. The way the players intertwine each note with the surrounding strikes is captivating. The complex polyrhythms blend so well that they become one movement, much like a traditional African experience.

For more information, call 767-7660, ext. 2 and follow the library on Facebook for updates. The program is free and is made possible through the support of Friends of the South Portland Public Library. The event is held outside of the library’s usual hours of operation. The library will be closed to regular business during this event.
