Cape resident earns patient care award

New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland presented several awards at its annual Employee Appreciation Day celebrations held May 30 and 31.

Occupational therapist Jen Villacci Potter of Cape Elizabeth received The Buzz Fitzgerald Award, established by the friends and family of Buzz Fitzgerald to be awarded to a staff member who has demonstrated extraordinary care to rehab patients and their families.

Fitzgerald valued leadership skills, and felt being a leader was a responsibility as well as an opportunity. The responsibility was to provide leadership through integrity, mentoring and honesty and the best way to do so was by example. The opportunity was to teach, to give people the chance to be successful, to try new initiatives and do and be the best they can. Potter has had the opportunity to provide care to many patients over her years at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland.

The concept that every patient should be treated with dignity and respect is not something that this clinician had to be taught. Each patient is approached as if they were a family member. Compassion is second nature for her. She takes great pride in helping her patients regain their independence and ability to return home. She has been known to make extra effort to assure that the patient’s transition to home was successful.
