Food waste program open to all residents

Because feedback from residents and data collected from the South Portland’s food waste collection pilot program were both positive, the city will begin a food waste recycling program for all residents.

Starting in July, the city will provide 12-gallon wheeled bins (while supplies last) to residents who wish to recycle food scraps. Residents can opt in to receive a bin by contacting Julie Rosenbach, sustainability director at 347-4148. The bins may be lined with plastic bags or use smaller clear bags to contain food scraps.

Residents will have two options for disposal: to bring food waste to one of four designated drop off sites for free (transfer station, 929 Highland Ave.; city hall, 25 Cottage Road; golf course maintenance building, 221 Westbrook St.; or Redbank Community Hub, 580 Westbrook St.

Residents may also hire Garbage to Garden, a private food waste hauler, to pick up scraps at their homes for a monthly fee. The city has negotiated a reduced rate for the service.
