(Courtesy photo) We hope you’ll come and join the fun at Bug Light Park on July 4 where South Portland Historical Society will host the Independence Day Classic Car Show, sponsored by Yankee Ford.

The museum will open at 10 a.m., followed by the barbecue opening at 11 a.m.

Proceeds from the barbecue go to support the museum.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., we will enjoy a display of classic and vintage cars. This is a cruise-in car show, so if you have an antique or vintage car, you are welcome to just arrive with it, but we do encourage people to call in advance to let us know that you plan to be there.

Pre-registering your car will help us with planning the event and will speed up the check in process at the show. There is no charge to attend this event.

To preregister or for more information, please give us a call at 767-7299.

Other events at the car show include:

At noon, we will enjoy a lively reading of the Declaration of Independence by our own Benjamin Franklin (performed by society member, John Kierstead).

The Summer in Maine Auction will also be concluding at the car show.

Final bids can be placed in person at the event. Bidding will close shortly after the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Our thanks to Yankee Ford for sponsoring the event. We hope to see you on the Fourth of July.

All proceeds from the barbecue and auction go directly to support the historical society and its museum. Plus, there is nothing quite like the reading of the Declaration of Independence to put you in the spirit of the day.

Kathryn Onos DePhilippo is director of the South Portland Historical Society.
