Geologist to speak at library about Willard

The South Portland Public Library welcomes Mark Swanson for a photographic tour through the rocks and geologic structures exposed at either end of WiIlard Beach at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 at the Main Library. These rocks display a long 400 million year history of folding, stretching, shearing, and more stretching long before being submerged beneath the ocean, buried by glacial sediment and then uplifted to where they are today. Swanson will lead audience members through these stages using slides and rock sample demonstrations.

The event is part of the library’s Summer Reading Program, which will feature music and geology events throughout the summer months related to this year’s theme, “Libraries Rock!”

Swanson is now a professor in the geography-anthropology department at the University of Southern Maine with 35 years of field research into the deformation history of Maine’s coastal bedrock. He has a Ph.D. from State University of New York at Albany, a M.S. from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and a B.S. from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts.
