City offers reminders for new recycling program

With South Portland’s Food Waste Recycling program underway, the city’s sustainability office wants to share the following information:

The public works department has started to deliver bins to participating households. Watch for a food waste bin at the curb in coming weeks.

The Main Library drop-off site has been changed to city hall. Note the four designated drop-off sites where residents may bring their food waste free of charge: South Portland City Hall (25 Cottage Road); South Portland Transfer Station (929 Highland Ave.); golf course maintenance building (221 Westbrook St.); and the Neighborhood Resource Hub (580 Westbrook St.).

Reuse clear produce bags from the grocery store to contain food waste or a white kitchen trash bag to line the bin. Food waste cannot be bagged in black trash bags.

More bins are available. Residents can sign up to get a free bin by completing an online form or by contacting Julie Rosenbach at 347-4148. For more information, visit the Food Waste Recycling Program page on the city website.
