Garden tour brings in thousands for Fort

The eighth annual Cape Elizabeth Garden Tour drew more than 500 visitors and raised more than $40,000 for the Fort Williams Park Foundation in July, helping to ensure that the nonprofit’s mission of preserving the history and natural beauty of the park will continue.

The garden tour featured eight private gardens in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland in addition to two areas of the park made possible by the foundation: The Children’s Garden and the first phase of Cliff Walk Landscape, the latter of which made its official public debut during the tour. A total of 512 visitors attended this year’s tour, bringing in $41,191 in revenue from the sale of tickets, commemorative posters and raffles.

The foundation’s arboretum project is a multi-year endeavor to remove invasive plant species, plant and encourage the growth of native species and renovate key areas to enhance user enjoyment. So far, the foundation has completed three arboretum sites.
