Bug Light 5K to support historic preservation
By Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo
South Portland Historical Society

The South Portland Historical Society invites you to join us at the seventh annual Bug Light 5K Race/Walk, to be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. The scenic, professionally certified course is ideal for walking or running, starting at Bug Light Park and winding its way along the waterfront, through historic Fort Preble and SMCC, out to Willard Square and then back to the park. Members of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets will be stationed along the course to provide directions. A kids’ fun run will take place before the 5K at 8:30 a.m. Post-race massages will be provided by Soma Massage & Wellness. A huge thanks to our race sponsors: Noyes Hall & Allen Insurance, Bennett Law Firm, Rewind 100.9FM and Coca-Cola.

The beneficiary of the 2018 Bug Light 5K is the South Portland Historical Society. The society collects and preserves historical photographs, papers, objects and other items significant to the community’s past. It also provides free public access to thousands of historic images through its Online Museum; it operates Cushing’s Point Museum at Bug Light Park ,which is open to the public daily with no admission charges; and it offers other events, lectures and programs for all ages.

Walking has been proven to help keep your body and mind active and healthy. People of all ages and fitness abilities take part in the Bug Light 5K – so come on out and join with other community members in support of our local historical society. If you are running the 5K, cash prizes are available to the top overall finishers and medals are given to the top finishers by age category. Whether running or walking the beautiful course with views of Casco Bay and the islands, participants know that they are supporting a great cause.

Registration for the Bug Light 5K is open and there is a limited supply of free T-shirts for those who register soon. Preregistration is $30 and helps us to plan the event. Same day registrations will be $35. Log on to the race website at www.buglight5k.com to learn more and to register. Please consider encouraging other family members, friends and neighbors to come out and join you in the race/walk.
