Next After Hours concert is Oct. 13 at library

South Portland Public Library will hold its next After Hours concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 featuring the Maine Marimba Ensemble, a Zimbabwean-style marimba show.

Maine Marimba Ensemble is a percussion band based in Portland. It not only plays marimbas – members also make them. Marimbas are large wooden xylophone-like instruments, and the ones the band plays are hand-made by band member Jacob Wolff. The ensemble incorporates great rhythms that inspire foot-tapping, hip-swaying and energetic dancing.

Maine Marimba Ensemble is comprised of members Tchukki Andersen, Kevin Caron, Rob Cimitile, Elliot Heeschen, Pete Himmer, Zebulon Kelley, Chris Fletcher, Matt Wasowski and Jacob Wolff. The complex polyrhythms blend so well that they become one movement, much like a traditional African experience.

For more information, call 767-7660, ext. 2 or follow the library on Facebook for updates. This program is free and is made possible through the support of Friends of the South Portland Public Library. The event is held outside of the library’s usual hours of operation. The library will be closed to regular business during this event.
