Residents walk in parade

South Portland residents Ralph and Michele Trynor walked in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day, alongside the float sponsored by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs.

Since 1890, the Tournament of Roses has produced a New Year’s celebration, bringing the traditions of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game to Pasadena and the world.

Ralph Trynor, the grand warden of Maine and Michele Trynor, the District Grand Master of Districts 1 and 7, are members of Unity Lodge 3 in South Portland and Fraternity Lodge 6 in Portland. They both also belong to Ivy Lodge 5, the women’s side of the organization called the Rebekahs.

An invite to walk in the parade went out to all Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in their individual chapter newsletters. Those who wanted to participate submitted applications. About 50 members of the group from throughout the country were signed up to walk in the parade.

Each walker was required to work on the float for at least two days.
