WinterFest to be held this month

The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club and the city of South Portland will present the seventh annual WinterFest celebration Friday, January 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.

The event features free family outdoor activities designed to promote healthy winter recreation at city facilities. South Portland’s Parks and Recreation Department provides the facilities and organizes the events.

Friday activities will be concentrated at Mill Creek and include a skating party with refreshments, fire pit and a warming hut built by Rotary Club members. There will also be live music provided by the Stone Free band, and family games.

Saturday events will be at Wainwright Field off Highland Avenue with many events for children and adults alike. There will be a cardboard sledding contest, sledding hill, disc golf, a mile long snow obstacle course, horse-drawn wagon rides, chili and chowder challenge, Touch-A-Truck, a chicken wing eating contest and outdoor games. There will be an outdoor ice rink for use that is donated by Port Harbor Marine. A limited number of skates will be provided for those who do not bring their own. There will also be fireworks and commercial food trucks.

Local businesses will sponsor events. Any proceeds will be used by Rotary for charitable projects in the community.
