Keeping Kids Academically Stimulated in Summer!

Keeping kids academically stimulated during the summer is always a challenge. At the Maine School of Science and Mathematics STEM Summer Camp (MSSM) in beautiful Aroostook County, there are three classes covering all the STEM topics, plus an afternoon of fun activities. No need to have any prior skills, just a passion for learning.

Imagine learning about robots/virtual reality, building and launching your own rocket, and calculating how far a potato will go using a 10-foot catapult and then flying down a 100-foot waterslide, playing board games with new friends, and competing in the challenges of Monster Night. Campers come from all over Maine and even around the world. What a great chance for your child aged 9-14 to meet new people, stay in learning mode, and have a great time during the summer. Transportation to/from camp via I-95 to South Portland and financial aid/ scholarships are available. Contact MSSM today at 207-325-3600 and reserve your spot today.

Summer At Portland Pottery in Portland, Maine

Summer at Portland Pottery is fun both inside and outside our studios! Our days run from 9am until 3 pm. Each day we have four blocks of creative activity, a long, leisurely lunch break with outdoor activities, and games. Some weeks feature visiting artists, field trips, and lunch at the Eastern Prom park. During the clay inspired weeks students will learn to throw on the pottery wheels and use different hand building techniques. Students will understand the many steps that their pieces need to go through before they can enjoy ice cream out of their handmade bowl. Pieces will be glazed and fired for a terrific end of the week art show for our campers and their families. Portland Pottery also offers Glass and Metalsmithing weeks where students learn to make beautiful pieces of Jewelry and sculpture. The Portland Pottery staff thrive to engage your child and pull out their unique creative spirit.

Camp Alsing – A Maine Summer Camp Where You Can Be You!

Camp Alsing in Unity, Maine, is a co-ed residential summer camp for children ages 9-17 with high-functioning autism and other social communication challenges.

We empower our campers in a fun, supportive environment with guidance from specially-trained staff. We provide campers with the tools to solve problems more independently, and to build new connections less encumbered by the social anxiety that inhibits enjoyment of new experiences.

Our social learning program is influenced by the Social Thinking® approach of Michelle Garcia Winner, MA CCC-SLP, and the 360 Thinking Model of Executive Function Skills of Sarah Ward, MS CCC-SLP.

We believe camp is the ideal environment to build meaningful connections, and we believe Maine is the best place on earth to go to camp. Activities are offered in a “challenge by choice” environment and our campers try new activities because they feel safe, comfortable and accepted in our camp community. Activities include kayaking, swimming, canoeing, archery, fly-fishing, drama, arts and crafts, high/low ropes course, climbing wall, and so much more. www.campalsing.com, Emily@campalsing.com or 207-805-4155.

Salt Pump Summer Camp

Kids (and their parents) are falling hard for indoor climbing

As indoor rock climbing prepares for its Olympic debut in 2020, children of all ages are falling in love with this dynamic and multi-dimensional sport.

“I love climbing because it’s something you don’t think you can do,” says 9-yearold Katie Smith. “But then I work at it with my friends, and suddenly, I’m at the top.”

“Climbing challenges you mentally and physically – and it teaches great teamwork,” says Tino Fiumara, Head Route Setter at Salt Pump Climbing Co, a Scarborough-based indoor gym facility. And kids pick it up the quickest, Fiumara adds. “Whether it’s getting up a tree or out of the crib, kids already know how to climb.”

As Salt Pump readies for a full schedule of summer camps, the benefits of climbing are already obvious to many parents. “My little climber has been so excited to share her experience with everyone,”one mother says. “She loved climbing blindfolded and being able to learn belaying… it’s packed full of fun, learning and adventure!”
