Volunteers will do taxes for low income residents

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program has moved from the basement in South Portland City Hall to the American Legion Hall on Broadway.

Trained and IRS certified volunteers prepare federal and state of Maine tax returns for low to moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those older than 50. Volunteers also prepare state of Maine returns for those eligible for the Maine Property Tax Fairness Credit, but otherwise have no tax filing requirement.

This totally free, no strings attached, service is available to all low to moderate income taxpayers. Taxpayers do not need to be over 50, nor be members of AARP. Volunteers are trained to prepare returns that include a majority of the types of income, expenses and credits encountered by taxpayers in these income categories.

Each Monday, from now through April 8, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers will be at the South Portland American Legion hall from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To make an appointment, call 518- 8579. Although walk-ins are accepted, those with appointments have priority.
