After hours concert features banjoist

The South Portland Public Library’s next featured performer in the After Hours concert series is Peter Mezoian and his outrageous banjo. The show begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the library’s main location at 482 Broadway in South Portland.

Mezoian puts on an entertaining and educational show that redefines the modern banjoist, drawing his technique and approach from the smooth, lush tone of early American popular and jazz music. The roaring ’20s catches up with the psychedelic 1960s in the songs Mezoian plays, with infectious rhythms and provoking melodies that span multiple genres and generations of song. The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Irving Berlin, Paul Simon, Cole Porter, Gershwin and more all meet at Mezoian’s outrageous banjo.

From night club stages in England and Japan to music festivals and cruise ships, Mezoian has traveled the world with his eclectic banjo performance. Described as funny, charming and engaging, his shows delight audiences with both unique music and educational anecdotes.

The concert will be held outside of the library’s usual hours of operation, and as such, regular library services will not be available. The program is made possible through the support of Friends of the South Portland Public Library. Admission is free. Questions can be directed to the South Portland Public Library at 767- 7660.
