South Portland Police arrested a woman on the morning of Thursday, June 28, who allegedly stole more than $1,800 from apartment-seekers through a Craigslist scam.

Lisa Hinerman, 26, a homeless woman from the Portland area, allegedly listed an apartment located on Grandview Avenue on Craigslist that was actually owned by the South Portland Housing Authority, then represented herself as the person responsible for renting that property.

Two alleged victims of Hinerman’s scam contacted South Portland police on Wednesday, June 27. The next morning, officers from South Portland and Portland arrested Hinerman at a hotel on Riverside Street in Portland where she had agreed to meet with one of the alleged victims.

Hinerman was charged with two felony counts of theft by deception. She also had an outstanding warrant for her arrest related to prior theft charges. Lt. Frank Clark of the South Portland Police Department said Hinerman has a “lengthy criminal history” that includes several prior theft convictions.

Police said other potential victims may have visited the property on Grandview Avenue. Hinerman’s case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office. Clark said “additional charges are likely.”

“This is a good reminder of the potential illegitimate uses and pitfalls of sites such as Craigslist,” Clark said. He encouraged residents to remember the adage, “If it seems to good to be true…”
