Visitors to Wood Island Lighthouse can climb to the top and glimpse a panoramic view of the grounds and Saco Bay. The last keeper to live on the island left in 1986. In 2012 the Coast Guard installed an LED beacon designed to last longer, cost less and require little to no maintenance. Russ Lowell (right) was a lighthouse keeper on Wood Island from 1979 to 1982. He captains the boat that takes tours to the island a few times a week in July and August. Lowell said he believed some of the superstitions surrounding the island and if he left out certain items overnight like pens and calculators, they would be gone in the morning.
