The 430 students of South Portland's Skillin Elementary School, home to one of Maine’s largest and most diverse K-5 populations, with students from 29 nations, has just completed its second week representing Cumberland County in the Winter Kids competition, pitting them against peers from each Maine county for $5,000 in Gold Medal prizes. Here, Saytun Musse tests out a pair of snowshoes outside Skillin School. Week one of the competition featured outdoor activities (with some held inside due to dangerously frigid temperatures), while this week was all about nutrition. Students will employ math and engineering skills to build their best cardboard sleds during week three, with a public winter carnival to follow in week four. Anyone willing to lend a hand for the carnival should contact Assistant Principal Sarah Maxwell by emailing maxwelsa@spsdme.org, or calling 773-7375. (Courtesy photo) 1p1.jpg
