More than 1,400 women, including nearly 200 cancer survivors, participated in the seventh annual Tri for a Cure triathlon, presented by WEX Inc., which was run in South Portland and parts of Cape Elizabeth on Sunday, July 20. It’s a female-only event that raised $1.37 million to help ensure more people survive the disease. All money raised stays in Maine, going to a host of organizations headed up by the Maine Cancer Foundation. The triathlon, which started and finished on the Southern Maine Community College campus, included a one-third-mile swim, a 16.5-mile bike course and a 3.1 mile run, with more than 450 volunteers helping to ensure a successful event.
